What are the benefits Acupuncture provides?

The World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends acupuncture for over 100 conditions.

For more information check out the link here.  Research indicates 28 conditions for which acupuncture was ‘proven – through controlled trials – to be an effective treatment’.  There are also 63 conditions for which acupuncture was shown to have a ‘therapeutic effect’, although they would like to see more evidence.  For another 9 conditions, acupuncture showed ‘some therapeutic effect’, meaning that it is worth trying when other treatments are less desirable.

What is Acupuncture & How Does it Work?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice thousands of years old that involves inserting hair-thin needles into specific points on your body. The idea behind acupuncture is that our bodies have a natural energy flow, called "qi", which travels through pathways known as meridians or “fascial planes”. When this energy flow is disrupted or imbalanced, it can lead to health problems, like pain or illness. The needles inserted into certain points on the body, trigger various responses in your body that can help restore the balance of this energy flow and promote the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

For our science nerds out there, Acupuncture works through:

  • Stimulating Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) aka “Qi”. ATP is an organic compound that provides energy to drive and support many processes in living cells, such as muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis.

  • Nerve Stimulation: When the needles are inserted, they stimulate sensory nerves in your skin and muscles. This stimulation sends signals to your central nervous system (CNS), which can trigger the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins. This helps reduce pain and improve your overall well-being.

  • Modulating the Nervous System: Acupuncture may also affect your autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions like heart rate and digestion. By stimulating certain acupuncture points, it helps regulate and balance these functions.

  • Blood Flow and Inflammation: Acupuncture can also influence blood flow and systemic or localized inflammation in the body. The insertion of needles can promote better circulation and reduce inflammation, which can be beneficial for a variety of conditions.

  • Have Tried Other Treatments with Limited Success: If other treatments have not provided the desired results or have caused unwanted side effects, individuals may turn to acupuncture as an alternative.
